THE FUNDRAISING CO-ORDINATORS: SUSAN and JOHN ADAM
In July 2003, Susan and John packed up their house on the far north coast of NSW, Australia, and headed to Kenya to commence work in Nairobi - Susan as an early childhood trainer / mentor, and John with a wealth of building knowledge. Soon after arriving, they met a local Kenyan woman, Emily Agisa, who worked at a day-care centre for orphaned and needy children. In late 2004, following John and Susan’s involvement, a timely visit from Byron Bay by Paul Kelly, and the financial support of a few Australian individuals and groups (including African LEAF), the centre moved to a more suitable building - the initial tin shed was replaced by several rooms of a solid brick construction. In 2006, Emily took over the running of the Centre and enthusiastically re-named it ‘SAINTS OF HOPE’. Situated on the outskirts of the Kawangware slum, with good security and running water, it is truly a sanctuary for the little children who attend each day, with the space and freedom to play, hear stories, and sing and dance. Emily’s aim is to provide young children with quality education, a safe and healthy environment, and the opportunity to grow through their young years surrounded by love and care.
